WHAT IS AN EVENT?
If we are to set up a NETWORK OF EVENTS, we have to agree on the meaning of "event". We propose a list of definitions, to which everyone is invited to append further ones:
1) The event is an action or a chain of actions that involve an environment and its structural traits, i.e. the way it is used, its architectural functions and the people who occupy it either as inhabitants or passers-by. The event has its *singleness*; albeit organized, it always has something unrepeatable which escapes any codification. This causes an alteration of the codes which govern the spaces on the territory. Likewise, the event has its *totality*; albeit fixed in space and time, it totally involves the environment, i.e. the space-time, all the bodies and minds it contains and the empty spaces between the bodies as well.
2) If the event involves all the people in that space-time, then its aim is *aggregation*. The organization of an event may require a mobilization of the masses, but it also may take place thanks to a few people - all that is necessary, however, is aggregation, apart from the social, cultural and/or professional condition of those who join the event. In a word, the event is always *collective*.
3) The people who organize or take part in an event find new possibilities, a different way of using the urban space. This unveils the compulsory violence of everyday codification which imposes behaviours on each individual, as well as its connections to police control. Such an energy-giving emotional/phisical involvement is the precondition for any reaction against the State control machines. In short, the event has an *insurrectional potential*.
